Artist: Ruthie Foster
Album: Let It Burn
Released: 2012
Quality: mp3 VBR ~240
Size: 94 MB
”One of the gospel-blues scene’s best-kept secrets for over a decade, Texan singer/songwriter Ruthie Foster finally achieved some long-overdue mainstream recognition when her 2009 sixth studio effort, The Truth According to Ruthie Foster, picked up a Grammy nomination. By putting down the guitar and concentrating entirely on her vocals for the first time in her career, her follow-up, Let It Burn, suggests she means business. It’s a wise move, as her impassioned, soulful tones have always been her main selling point, and backed by an impressive array of musicians, including the Meters’ rhythm section and legendary gospel act the Blind Boys of Alabama, they’re allowed the freedom to showcase their versatility, whether it’s channeling the velvety smoothness of Anita Baker on the atmospheric blues of John Martyn’s “Don’t Want to Know,” matching the power of Aretha Franklin on the a cappella rendition of early 20th century folk standard “The Titanic,” or echoing the spiritual leanings of Carleen Anderson on the harmony-driven opener “Welcome Home.” Alongside the groove-laden old-school R&B of “Aim for the Heart” and the pure gospel of “Lord Remember Me,” the latter is the only original composition, but John Chelew’s inspired production ensures there’s still plenty of invention elsewhere. Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” is rendered almost unrecognizable thanks to a gorgeously shimmering and reverb-laden arrangement, Pete Seeger’s “If I Had a Hammer” is transformed into an authentic slice of New Orleans jazz, while Ike Stubblefield’s rich organ riffs lend a hymnal quality to the likes of the Band’s “It Makes No Difference” and the William Bell duet “You Don’t Miss Your Water.” Effortlessly classy covers of Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain” and the Black Keys’ “Everlasting Light” show she isn’t averse to more contemporary fare. But whichever era Foster picks and chooses from, Let It Burn always feels utterly timeless.” ~ by Jon O’Brien, allmusic.com

Album: The Nomad Series Vol. 4: The Wilderness
Release Date: March 2012
Quality: mp3 CBR 320
Size: 97 MB
”The title, The Wilderness, in some odd way seemed to define what these songs were actually “about”: fragility, emptiness, loneliness, beauty, chance, loss, desperation, the delicate balancing act that makes up a life. They are about being lost in the wilderness of age, the wilderness of parenthood, in the wilderness of just trying to find meaning and substance, happiness and truth in one’s day to day life. They are about standing alone in middle of it all, breathing in the cold still air and wondering.” ~ Michael Timmons, Cowboy Junkies
Artist: Koko Taylor
Album: Deluxe Edition
Released: 2002
Quality: mp3 CBR 320
Size: 150 MB
“US R&B singer, sometimes refered to as “The Queen of Chicago Blues”. Born september 28, 1928, Bartlett, Tennessee. Dubbed “Koko” due to her love of chocolate. Discovered by Willie Dixon in 1962 leading to a contract with Chess. In close collaboration with Dixon she released several singles, including the 1965 “Wang Dang Doodle” previously recorded by Howlin’ Wolf. Not coincidental. Taylor’ had the most powerful vocal of the contemporary female Chess staplemates including Etta James, Mitty Collier and Irma Thomas and her shouting style had more in common with e.g. Big Mama Thornton and Howlin’ Wolf. Her 1969 selftitled debut album is mostly a compilation of her Chess singles. From 1975 and for more than 30 years she recorded for Alligator Records. Her 1985 album “Queen of the blues” won her a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album that year. Performing till the end, she died after complications from surgery for gastrointestinal bleeding in 2009. Died June 03, 2009 in Chicago, Illinois, USA.” ~ Discogs

Album: Sugar In My Bowl: Hard Drivin’ Mamas - Vintage Sex Songs, 1923-1952
Released: 2004
Quality: mp3 CBR 320
Size: 114 MB
Although it’s a popular notion that America’s fascination with all things sexual burst into the open during the Sexual Revolution of the 1960s, this ribald collection of sex songs drawn mostly from the 1920s and 1930s shows that things were bubbling along well before that. Sung here by female blues and jazz singers, these suggestive songs use various food metaphors to talk about sex, and give credence to the possibility that food and sex have been linked together in the American mindset for a good long time. All manner of condiments, hot dogs, peanuts, and jelly rolls parade through these tracks until one feels like driving straight to the nearest convenience store for some late-night snacks, which, come to think of it, Americans do all the time. Bessie Smith even manages to get sugar, hot dogs, and jelly rolls all into one line in the opener and title tune here, “I Need a Little Sugar in My Bowl,” while Lil Johnson goes so far as to name names in “Sam the Hot Dog Man.” There are some surprises, too, like gospel guitarist and singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe doing a pair of decidedly secular tunes, “I Want a Tall Skinny Papa” and “Rock Me,” which features some pretty cool guitar, by the way. The most startling track is the final one, Lucille Bogan’s “Shave ‘Em Dry” from 1935, which dispenses with metaphor altogether and talks about sex with a stunning directness, even using the F-word with a precise exactness that contemporary rappers often seem unable to grasp, for all their use of the word and its derivations. Bogan’s recording has horrible sound, but it somehow all adds to the stark, unforgiving honesty of it, and “Shave ‘Em Dry” gives off an unbelievable intensity. Food is the last thing on her mind. ~ Steve Leggett
