At the request of many friends and jazz fans, Larry Jackstien has assembled a list of what he considers the best recorded jazz of the last half century.  Larry is a prominent jazz musician, concert producer, fanatical CD collector and jazz fan.  In addition, he also serves as Managing Director of Sales and Marketing for Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort, located near Salt Lake City, Utah. >

The list obviously reflects Larry’‘s taste in jazz which lean more heavily on classic, mainstream styles, but the interested jazz fan will find a wide enough variety to be satisfied with the collection. >

Larry described the origin of the list in his own words: “People who knew me as a fanatical collector of jazz recordings often asked me what they should buy to start and build a jazz CD collection.  After many inquiries, I spent some time putting this list together.  Each year, I add about eight to ten albums.  The albums cited are excellent all the way through.  They don’‘t just reflect one or two good selections.  Over the years I have looked at other’‘s lists of great jazz albums and found that there is much common agreement among listeners and critics on many of the greatest recordings.  I believe the quality and depth of the list is indicative that there are only about 10 recordings each year which are absolutely fabulous.  I am also pleased to share this compilation with others.”

354. PARIS CONCERT* - Keith Jarrett - ECM

http://rapidshare.com/files/4822110/1988_Paris_Concert.rar

The self-imposed quarantine on solo concerts over, Keith Jarrett returned to the improvisatory format that he virtually invented, mellower and more devotional than ever. Indeed, within the 38 minutes of solo improvisation captured at Paris’‘s Salle Pleyel, Jarrett pulls further away from the old rousing (and thoroughly American) gospel, blues and folk roots of earlier concerts toward a more abstract concept. Opening with a soaring, lyrical canonic melody, he rambles through his familiar obsessive hammering, grand tremolos, and the like before topping it off with an ethereal tune that turns somber. There are two encores — Russ Freeman’‘s “The Wind,” awhich begins with a brief swatch of Steve Reich-like minimalism but swiftly turns reflective the rest of the way, and “Blues,” a welcome if brief return to one of the pianist’‘s root sources. Again, Jarrett’‘s virtuosic abilities are never in doubt, and he rarely flaunts his technique for its own sake, but one senses that the inspiration level is down; one doesn’‘t come out of the CD all charged up as with many earlier solo concerts. >Allmusic<

6. SONNY ROLLINS AND THE CONTEMPORARY LEADERS* - Contemporary with Qblog ads @ 320

http://rapidshare.com/files/22801826/Sonny_Rollins_and_The_Contemporary_Leaders.part2.rar

The last of the classic Sonny Rollins albums prior to his unexpected three-year retirement features the great tenor with pianist Hampton Hawes, guitarist Barney Kessell bassist Leroy Vinnegar and drummer Shelly Manne (all bandleaders for Contemporary Records during this era) on an unusual but inspired list of standards. Rollins creates explorative and often witty improvisations on such songs as “Rock-A-Bye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody,” “You,” “In the Chapel in the Moonlight” and roaring versions of “I’‘ve Found a New Baby” and “The Song Is You.” Great music. >Allmusic<

18. TIME OUT* - Dave Brubeck - Columbia 256k

http://rapidshare.com/files/22897648/_Time_Out.rar

In Flac

http://lix.in/1f2478

Dave Brubeck’‘s defining masterpiece, Time Out is one of the most rhythmically innovative albums in jazz history, the first to consciously explore time signatures outside of the standard 4/4 beat or 3/4 waltz time. It was a risky move — Brubeck’‘s record company wasn’‘t keen on releasing such an arty project, and many critics initially roasted him for tampering with jazz’‘s rhythmic foundation. But for once, public taste was more advanced than that of the critics. Buoyed by a hit single in altoist Paul Desmond’‘s ubiquitous “Take Five,” Time Out became an unexpectedly huge success, and still ranks as one of the most popular jazz albums ever. That’‘s a testament to Brubeck and Desmond’‘s abilities as composers, because Time Out is full of challenges both subtle and overt — it’‘s just that they’‘re not jarring. Brubeck’‘s classic “Blue Rondo à la Turk” blends jazz with classical form and Turkish folk rhythms, while “Take Five,” despite its overexposure, really is a masterpiece; listen to how well Desmond’‘s solo phrasing fits the 5/4 meter, and how much Joe Morello’‘s drum solo bends time without getting lost. The other selections are richly melodic as well, and even when the meters are even, the group sets up shifting polyrhythmic counterpoints that nod to African and Eastern musics. Some have come to disdain Time Out as it’‘s become increasingly synonymous with upscale coffeehouse ambience, but as someone once said of Shakespeare, it’‘s really very good in spite of the people who like it. It doesn’‘t just sound sophisticated — it really is sophisticated music, which lends itself to cerebral appreciation, yet never stops swinging. Countless other musicians built on its pioneering experiments, yet it’‘s amazingly accessible for all its advanced thinking, a rare feat in any art form. This belongs in even the most rudimentary jazz collection. >Allmusic<

47. WAY OUT WEST* - Sonny Rollins - Contemporary 192 k

http://rapidshare.com/files/22905352/Way_Out_West.rar

The timeless Way out West established Sonny Rollins as jazz’‘s top tenor saxophonist (at least until John Coltrane surpassed him the following year). Joined by bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne, Rollins is heard at one of his peaks on such pieces as “I’‘m an Old Cowhand (From the Rio Grande),” his own “Way out West,” “There Is No Greater Love,” and “Come, Gone” (a fast stomp based on “After You’‘ve Gone”). The William Claxton photo of Rollins wearing Western gear (and holding his tenor) in the desert is also a classic. [The Contemporary re-release appends three bonus tracks, all of them alternate takes.] >Allmusic<

249. WORK TIME* - Sonny Rollins - Prestige 192 k

http://rapidshare.com/files/22906989/1955_Work_Time.rar

For this LP-length CD reissue, tenor great Sonny Rollins plays five songs (including the unlikely “There’‘s No Business Like Show Business”) in a quartet with pianist Ray Bryant, bassist George Morrow, and his then-current employer, drummer Max Roach. Rollins was an original stylist from the start, and in late 1955 he was ready to take his place among the greats. The enjoyable outing (which is included in Rollins’’ huge Complete Prestige Recordings box set) may not be essential, but it is a strong effort. >Allmusic<

138. NEFERTITI* - Miles Davis - Columbia 192 vbr

http://rapidshare.com/files/22911029/1967_Nefertiti.rar

Nefertiti, the fourth album by Miles Davis’’ second classic quintet, continues the forward motion of Sorcerer, as the group settles into a low-key, exploratory groove, offering music with recognizable themes — but themes that were deliberately dissonant, slightly unsettling even as they burrowed their way into the consciousness. In a sense, this is mood music, since, like on much of Sorcerer, the individual parts mesh in unpredictable ways, creating evocative, floating soundscapes. This music anticipates the free-fall, impressionistic work of In a Silent Way, yet it remains rooted in hard bop, particularly when the tempo is a bit sprightly, as on “Hand Jive.” Yet even when the instrumentalists and soloists are placed in the foreground — such as Miles’’ extended opening solo on “Madness” or Hancock’‘s long solo toward the end of the piece — this never feels like showcases for virtuosity, the way some showboating hard bop can, though each player shines. What’‘s impressive, like on all of this quintet’‘s sessions, is the interplay, how the musicians follow an unpredictable path as a unit, turning in music that is always searching, always provocative, and never boring. Perhaps Nefertiti’‘s charms are a little more subtle than those of its predecessors, but that makes it intriguing. Besides, this album so clearly points the way to fusion, while remaining acoustic, that it may force listeners on either side of the fence into another direction. >Allmusic<

26. SWEET RAIN* - Stan Getz - Verve 320 k

http://rapidshare.com/files/22914042/Sweet_Rain.rar

One of Stan Getz’‘s all-time greatest albums, Sweet Rain was his first major artistic coup after he closed the book on his bossa nova period, featuring an adventurous young group that pushed him to new heights in his solo statements. Pianist Chick Corea, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Grady Tate were all schooled in ‘‘60s concepts of rhythm-section freedom, and their continually stimulating interplay helps open things up for Getz to embark on some long, soulful explorations (four of the five tracks are over seven minutes). The neat trick of Sweet Rain is that the advanced rhythm section work remains balanced with Getz’‘s customary loveliness and lyricism. Indeed, Getz plays with a searching, aching passion throughout the date, which undoubtedly helped Mike Gibbs’’ title track become a standard after Getz’‘s tender treatment here. Technical perfectionists will hear a few squeaks on the LP’‘s second half (Getz’‘s drug problems were reputedly affecting his articulation somewhat), but Getz was such a master of mood, tone, and pacing that his ideas and emotions are communicated far too clearly to nit-pick. Corea’‘s spare, understated work leaves plenty of room for Getz’‘s lines and the busily shifting rhythms of the bass and drums, heard to best effect in Corea’‘s challenging opener “Litha.” Aside from that and the title track, the repertoire features another Corea original (“Windows”), the typically lovely Jobim tune “O Grande Amor,” and Dizzy Gillespie’‘s Latin-flavored “Con Alma.” The quartet’‘s level of musicianship remains high on every selection, and the marvelously consistent atmosphere the album evokes places it among Getz’‘s very best. A surefire classic. >Allmusic<

29. BLUES AND THE ABSTRACT TRUTH* - Oliver Nelson - Impulse 256k

http://rapidshare.com/files/22917890/The_Blues_And_The_Abstract_Truth.rar

This was Oliver Nelson’‘s finest recording and one of the top jazz albums of 1961, a true classic. The lineup is an inspired one: Nelson on tenor and alto, Eric Dolphy doubling on alto and flute, a young trumpeter named Freddie Hubbard, baritonist George Barrow for section parts, pianist Bill Evans, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Roy Haynes. The contrasting voices of the soloists really uplift these superior compositions, which are highlighted by “Stolen Moments” (a future standard), the fun “Hoe Down,” and “Yearnin’‘.” Dolphy cuts everyone, but Nelson and Hubbard are also in top form. >Allmusic<

32. WALTZ FOR DEBBIE* - Bill Evans - Riverside 256k

http://rapidshare.com/files/22922958/_Waltz_for_Debby.part1.rar
http://rapidshare.com/files/22923893/_Waltz_for_Debby.part2.rar

Recorded at the Village Vanguard in 1961, shortly before Scott LaFaro’‘s death, Waltz for Debby is the second album issued from that historic session, and the final one from that legendary trio that also contained drummer Paul Motian. While the Sunday at the Village Vanguard album focused on material where LaFaro soloed prominently, this is far more a portrait of the trio on those dates. Evans chose the material here, and, possibly, in some unconscious way, revealed on these sessions — and the two following LaFaro’‘s death (Moonbeams and How My Heart Sings) — a different side of his musical personality that had never been displayed on his earlier solo recordings or during his tenures with Miles Davis and George Russell: Evans was an intensely romantic player, flagrantly emotional, and that is revealed here in spades on tunes such as “My Foolish Heart” and “Detour Ahead.” There is a kind of impressionistic construction to his harmonic architecture that plays off the middle registers and goes deeper into its sonances in order to set into motion numerous melodic fragments simultaneously. The rhythmic intensity that he displayed as a sideman is evident here in “Milestones,” with its muscular shifting time signature and those large, flatted ninths with the right hand. The trio’‘s most impressive interplay is in “My Romance,” after Evans’’ opening moments introducing the changes. Here Motian’‘s brushwork is delicate, flighty and elegant, and LaFaro controls the dynamic of the tune with his light as a feather pizzicato work and makes Evans’’ deeply emotional statements swing effortlessly. Of the many recordings Evans issued, the two Vanguard dates and Explorations are the ultimate expressions of his legendary trio. >Allmusic<

At the time, this two-record set was viewed as the end of an era. Now it only represents the climax of phase one. It’‘s an excellent set, though — among their best live efforts.

182. PURE DESMOND* - Paul Desmond - CTI 192 k

http://rapidshare.com/files/22956109/Pure_Desmond_1975.rar

With the Skylark “experiment” behind him, Desmond reverted back to the relaxed quartet format that suited him well in the past. The reason? Through Jim Hall, he found a little-known, splendid guitarist in Toronto named Ed Bickert who became his new gigmate in 1974, and this album was meant to show his discovery off. In fact, it sparked a Desmond renaissance where he regained a good deal of the witty spark and erudite cool of his collaborations with Hall, no matter how unfashionable it was to play this way in 1974. Bickert is an even more reticent player than Hall, softer in touch and temperament, but eminently musical, enough to fire up Paul’‘s creativity. Old Desmond hand Connie Kay lends sympathy and comfort on drums, and Ron Carter is on bass. “Squeeze Me,” “Everything I Love,” and “Till the Clouds Roll By” are the best examples of the empathy at work here but any track will do, including the two outtakes on the first CD release, the “Song From M*A*S*H” (which, come to think of it, always had a Desmond-like wistfulness about it) and Jobim’‘s “Wave,” which develops a suavely songful quality midway through.

523. NOCTURNE* - Charlie Haden Verve

Charlie Haden teams up once more with the young Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba for this melancholy, soothing album. Ignacio Berroa, on drums and percussion, completes the core trio. Special guests include tenor saxophonists Joe Lovano and David Sanchez, violinist Federico Britos Ruiz, and guitarist Pat Metheny (one track only). Rubalcaba contributes orchestrations on two cuts, both of which omit drums and percussion. Haden’‘s intention is to explore the bolero, a distinctive Latin dance rhythm that Ignacio Berroa accents with a soft, subtle snare drum roll, played with brushes, beginning on the “and” of the first beat of the bar and ending on the second. This rhythm is perfect for a slow dance, and indeed, the entire album is highly romantic, with bittersweet melodies and lilting cadences. The only problem is that Berroa’‘s bolero figure anchors nearly every track — perhaps what one should expect from a bolero album, but there’‘s no getting around the fact that the music sounds pretty much the same throughout. (To be fair, Berroa isn’‘t solely to blame for the sameness.) Most of the songs, save for two originals by Haden and one by Rubalcaba, are Cuban and Mexican standards, and they’‘re beauties. Haden’‘s reluctance to mess with them is understandable. But the unvaryingly straightforward arrangements fade too easily into the background. Nocturne may well be the best candlelight dinner music ever, but Haden and his guests are capable of more. >Allmusic<

8. SKETCHES OF SPAIN* - Miles Davis - Columbia 192 k

Along with Kind of Blue, In a Silent Way, and Round About Midnight, Sketches of Spain is one of Miles Davis’’ most enduring and innovative achievements. Recorded between November 1959 and March 1960 — after Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley had left the band — Davis teamed with British arranger Gil Evans for the third time. Davis brought Evans the album’‘s signature piece, “Concierto de Aranjuez,” after hearing a classical version of it at bassist Joe Mondragon’‘s house. Evans was as taken with it as Davis was, and set about to create an entire album of material around it. The result is a masterpiece of modern art. On the “Concierto,” Evans’’ arrangement provided an orchestra and jazz band — Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb, and Elvin Jones — the opportunity to record a classical work as it was. The piece, with its stunning colors and intricate yet transcendent adagio, played by Davis on a flügelhorn with a Harmon mute, is one of the most memorable works to come from popular culture in the 20th century. Davis’’ control over his instrument is singular, and Evans’’ conducting is flawless. Also notable are “Saeta,” with one of the most amazing technical solos of Davis’’ career, and the album’‘s closer, “Solea,” which is conceptually a narrative piece, based on an Andalusian folk song, about a woman who encounters the procession taking Christ to Calvary. She sings the narrative of his passion and the procession — or parade — with full brass accompaniment moving along. Cobb and Jones, with flamenco-flavored percussion, are particularly wonderful here, as they allow the orchestra to indulge in the lushly passionate arrangement Evans provided to accompany Davis, who was clearly at his most challenged here, though he delivers with grace and verve. Sketches of Spain is the most luxuriant and stridently romantic recording Davis ever made. To listen to it in the 21st century is still a spine-tingling experience, as one encounters a multitude of timbres, tonalities, and harmonic structures seldom found in the music called jazz. >Allmusic<
