Born in the south of France, Patrick Berrogain’s foray into the music world began at the age of 14 when he bought his first guitar with money he made from summer jobs. It was not long began playing bass and guitar semi-professionally while finishing high school. At 19 he landed a touring gig with an Italian pop band, Delta Landa, with whom he traveled the world for five years. He then moved to Ivory Coast, Africa where he performed pop and musette music with a local band. In 1984, Patrick decided to follow his dream to study jazz in America. He enrolled in the Musician’s Institute where he honed his jazz guitar skills from the likes of Joe Di’Orio and Scott Henderson. Simultaneously he studied composition and arranging at the Dick Groove School of Music. He graduated with special mention from the Institute in ‘85. It was at the school where he met his good friend Peter Sprague, with whom he studied nylon string guitar. With Peter’s encouragement, Patrick moved to San Diego where he has lived for the past two decades.
Although growing up in a culture that was steeped in the musette repertoire, it was not until 1998 that Patrick’s interest in Gypsy jazz piqued. Together with fellow ex-pat and rhythm guitarist,
Alain Cola, the two formed Hot Club of San Diego which enjoyed a nine year run.

In 2007, Patrick created his latest Gypsy jazz group, HOT CLUB COMBO

Today, Patrick enjoys writing and arranging for the band. His music has been used on radio and television around the world.

In addition to playing lead with Hot Club, Patrick has occasionally performed as a rhythm player for Gypsy Jazz master Angelo Debarre and is the translator/accompanist for Angelo’s Djangofest workshops .

    Thank’s for Huxley

    Attention ... legend!
Schnuckenack Reinhardt is a historical and inevitable swing manouche. Gypsy Swing should say. For it is undoubtedly he who has the most popular, with the help of Siegfried MÄEKER and the series of famous Musik deutscher Zigeuner, inspired this amazing style of Django and the musette waltz, of course, but also traditional gypsy melodies and Hungarian. A style that has made school and without whom this music would not be what it is today.
And then in the music Schnuckenack to both incredibly happy and deeply tragic, a little history of the Roma is meant.
And that a little ear, you can see their soul.
Biography transalated from DjangoStation (Google translation!)
    Violinist, singer (1921-2006)
My toys were my violin ...
Schnuckenack, which means “Pretty Nose” in Romance, was born on 17 February 1921 to Weinsheim Germany. His father, a cousin of the mother of Django, was also a violinist. At the age of three, the small Schnuckenack who had no other toys that the violin was able to give perfectly. Gypsy family leads a life as itinerant.
In 30 years, the clan moved to Mainz. Schnuckenack joined the Music Conservatory of the city where he received classical training.
The war and the flight ...
1938: The situation changed with the onset of the persecution of gypsies by the Nazis. The family is trapped Reinhardt few days before being deported to Poland. Miraculously they managed to escape in Czestochowa in pretending to be a folk group of Hungarian gypsies. They play in the cafe until 1943 “Europa” for German soldiers. Warned in time by a Nazi lover of music that the SS were about to arrest them, they fled to Krakow.
In Krakow, they are found by the Polish police. Bisch Winter’s sister Schnuckenack says that his father in shock said, “Now is the end, they will kill us all ...”. But wake up, he orders his son and family members: “Play, play ... Play our music.” The police, initially surprised, attentive, then start to cry. Unable to arrest and bring to a family death Reinhardt, they indicate a small village near Krakow, where they can hide.
    Death and sinking ...
Some time later, the SS are also conducting a raid against the village. They surround and capture a dozen young gypsy whose Schnuckenack. He managed nevertheless to escape into the crowd. The Nazis draw but missed. He took refuge in a barber shop where he will see the execution of his companions in misfortune.
Another time he walked around Krakow with a gypsy friend, a car stopped at their level. Two SS came out asking them to submit their papers. Of course, they did not. The SS comes up their guns, the two led to an unfortunate pit. Pointing their weapons at them, they were about to shoot when one of them mind and said: “You are both too” cute “… you do not deserve that kills you.” And they gave away!
The youngest brother Schnuckenack but not so lucky. He had a girlfriend whom he was so loving that he forgot to be careful: he tried to sleep in a German hotel. The maid immediately called the Gestapo. He was arrested and deported to Auschwitz where he was assassinated.
    The release
In 1944, Russians return to Poland and the Germans hunt. Reinhardt joined the train of fugitives (!) And returned to Germany. They settled in Kulmbach in Bavaria.
After the war, they are presented to the head of the Seventh Army, General Clay. Therefore Schnuckenack play for American soldiers. There he learns the jazz standards.
    Die Musik deutscher Zigeuner
In 1966, during a pilgrimage to Lourdes, Schnuckenack meets a young man who will change his life: Sigfried MÄEKER. This will convince the producer to make the violinist Musik der Zigeuner accessible to a wide audience. Schnuckenack therefore brings together musicians, a quintet form and gives a first concert in November 1967 in Heidelberg. The world discovered this amazing music of Hungarian music, musette waltz, jazz swing and gypsy folk.
It records in November 1968 the first volume of Musik deutscher Zigeuner Song at Da Camera. The first consists of Quintett Schnuckenack on violin, and Bobby Reinhardt Daweli Falta solo guitar, Spatzo Weiss to the rhythmic and Hojok Merstein on bass. A second disc will follow.
In 1970, Bobby Falta Daweli Reinhardt and are replaced by the Winterstein Holzmanno pump and especially the young virtuoso Häns’che Weiss disembarking East Germany. The Quintett runs beautifully, several fantastic albums are published including a memorable live with singer Goulesco Lida.
On the other Quintett ... and other ... and other ... !
In 1972, Häns’che Weiss left the band for personal reasons “he said. He took the opportunity to steal the rhythm of the violin: Holzmanno Winterstein Hojok Merstein and also leave the ship! The guitarist will create with Titi Winterstein (then aged 16) his own Quintet. And what Quintett ...
In turn, form a new Schnuckenack Quintett. Bobby Falta found the chorus guitar, Ricardo Reinhardt, one of his son at the pump, and two brothers, Schmeling Lehmann on guitar, Jani Lehmann on the bass. Many albums are made with different formations, Forello Reinhardt, another son of Schnuckenack taking the place of Bobby Falta chorus to guitar.
Since the late 60s, Schnuckenack Reinhardt recorded a twenty albums.
He died on 16 April 2006 in its 85th year, shortly after celebrating his farewell to the theater scene Bensheim (Germany), and had failed on this occasion its leadership to his step-brother, the violinist Schmitto Kling (of the Hot Club Zigani).
Barengero thank you for his biographical information, including those concerning the war years

The legendary guitar player Django Reinhardt (1910-1953) combined jazz,
classical, chanson and gypsy music and created one of the most unique
voices in the history of jazz. This style - often called Gypsy Jazz has
become very popular again in Scandinavia these days, mainly because of
three young musicians from Stockholm. The Swedish trio Hot Club de Suede
is now touring around the world to pay tribute to their hero Django
    Reinhardt and his legacy.

Among the late Charlie Byrd’s many albums and CD’s, this one is probably the most satisfying. No orchestra, no over-production – just great material and the guitarist confidently trading solos with Ken Peplowski on tenor sax or clarinet. Byrd’s distinctive, harmonically-inventive readings of these Jobim and Bonfa classics should appeal especially to amateur musicians seeking to explore the potential of the nylon-string guitar. Highly recommended.
