    Monsieur Melon, c’est d’abord un personnage créé et façonné depuis 10 ans par Mikou, le leader du groupe. Mikou vient de l’école du métro parisien où il a chanté et peaufiné son art entre 2000 et 2004. En 2005, il rencontre des musiciens venus d’horizons différents et monte sur les scènes de caf’ conc’ et enchaîne une moyenne de 70 concerts par an. En 2007, il réalise enfin son premier album : Même en hiver.
    Entouré de Marie à la guitare, d’Amine à la contrebasse et de l’excellent Sylvain aux clarinettes et sax, Mikou nous propose ses propres textes évoquant le goût de la route (Graines de nomades) et de la vie de bohême (ßohême d’automne, Chemins de traverse), l’expérience du métro (le métro, titre qu’on a déjà pu entendre en radio) ou des squares parisiens (Le square), les voyages en bateau (Journée en mer) et la métaphore maritime (L’auberge fluviale), et l’amour, bien sûr (Le dessinateur, L’âme sœur).
    Si le style très imprégné de swing manouche (pompe et valses…) rappelle immanquablement celui de Sansévérino et des Voleurs de Poule (cf L’auberge fluviale), Monsieur Melon possède sa propre personnalité et pose sur le monde et les gens un regard beaucoup plus attendri et très attachant. Entouré d’une multitude d’invités tous excellent musiciens (violon, accordéon), l’album s’écoute agréablement : les textes sont toujours réjouissants et les musiques souvent festives.
    A noter que le prochain album de Monsieur Melon sortira en novembre 2010.

    Europe has long been home to a young and vibrant jazz scene chiefly inspired by the work of Sinti guitarist Django Reinhardt. Following this tradition, countless jazz sessions in the heart of Regensburg over the past four years have given birth to a brand new ensemble: “The Grasselli Quartet & Arpad Vulkan”. The band, made up of bassist Reinhold Grassl (Regensburg) and jazz guitarists Arne Schmidt (Cologne), Sebastian Wintermeier (Regensburg) and Roman Baldauf (Regensburg), provides a new perspective on European Jazz. The Grasselli Quartett is joined for this project by Romanian-born tenor Arpad Vulkan. The classical singer imbues the swing compositions of the 1920s and пїЅ30s with a timeless charm.     Winifred Atwell was an accomplished and versatile pianist who was idolised by the British public throughout the 1950s. She had studied the piano since she had been a small child although she later became trained as a dispenser in the expectation that she would be employed in her father’s pharmacist shop. By the age of 30 she became aware that other local musicians had gained further musical training abroad and, encouraged by this, in 1945 she left for the USA.

    By the late 1940s she had gained a place at London’s Royal Academy of Music with ambitions of becoming a concert pianist. However, in order to finance this initiative she worked during the evenings at London’s clubs playing piano rags. By 1950 her popularity had spread nationally and she began recording with Decca during 1951- before the advent of any record sales ‘chart’.

    Her music also worked well on TV where she made regular appearances. She would normally start her act by playing a classical piece on a grand before transferring herself to what she called ‘my other piano’ which was an old ‘honky tonk’ upright. It was on this that she recorded many of her most successful numbers including her two #1’s and the now legendary ‘Black And White Rag’ which has been used as the signature tune of BBC’s ‘Pot Black’ snooker programme for several decades.

    February 3rd, 1979: the Jazzland is sold out. ItпїЅs a Saturday evening and itпїЅs the final night for Marc FossetпїЅs Trio. The band had already played several times in Neuchâtel, for the great pleasure of the audiences who are enticed by the warm complicity that unites the renowned Parisian left-handed guitar virtuoso, the Swiss-adopted Hammond player Jean-Luc Parodi, and the local drummer Denis Progin, owner of the Jazzland club. The repertoire mainly consists of standards that are familiar to the audience, who nonetheless are anxious to hear the arranged versions the Trio will produce of tunes such as Body and Sould, Oleo, On Green Dolphin Street, or even the bossanovas by Jobim like Corcovado and Desafinado.
    The electric guitar, with its strong and mellow sound, elegantly and respectfully phrased in the Bebop tradition, often accompanied by MarcпїЅs voice, connects admirably to Jean-LucпїЅs Hammond who fills beautifully the bass lines with his left hand on the keyboard. The rhythm is provided by DenisпїЅ energy and relentless tempo; he masters the ternary on the cymbals and rolls elegantly on the bass and snare drums.
    The recording was made with a Stellavox tape recorder placed on the edge of a table, to which three dynamic range mics were connected. These somewhat precarious conditions were quite common for an ethnomusicologist like me who was exploring and researching music in its typical exotic environment. The authentic sound of the Jazzland is thus brought to todayпїЅs listener unscathed. One can hear the audience with its exclamations, and the comments of the band members, in a typical jazz club setting.
    This CD is therefore a historical document that testifies the lively jazz scene of Neuchâtel at the end of the пїЅ70s, and it also pays homage to the late Denis Progin and Jean-Luc Parodi who passed away in 1997 and 1999, respectively.

Das Abend Repertoire entsteht aus berühmten Jazz Standards, geläufig zu den meistens Jazz Liebhabern die an diesem Abend ihre Erfahrungen mit denen vom Trio vorgeschlagen wie пїЅBody and SoulпїЅ, пїЅOleoпїЅ, пїЅOn green Dolphin StreetпїЅ oder Jobim Bossanovas wie пїЅCorcovadoпїЅ und пїЅDesafinadoпїЅ vergleichen möchten.
    Die elektrische Guitar, mit einem kraftvollen und gleichzeitig harmonischen Klang, in einer eleganten traditionellen Bebopstruktur gekleidet, häufig von Marc Stimme begleitet, paart sich ausgezeichnet mit der Hammond Orgel von Jean-Luc, der mit der linken Hand die Bass Begleitung sichert, sehr empfindlich, manchmal flach manchmal wild. Die rhythmische Begleitung wird energisch vom Denis gesichert, meisterhaft spielend zwischen Zymbals, Breaks und grosse Trommel.
    Die Aufnahme erfolgte mit einem Magnetophonband Stellavox, einfach auf einem Tisch positioniert, mit drei dynamischen Mikrophonen, in sehr prekären und unstabilen Konditionen, welche normalerweise die Ethnomusikologen bei der Untersuchung einer Musik auf einem exotischem Feld konfrontiert werden. Somit wird die echte Räumlichkeit des Jazzland wiedergegeben, пїЅliveпїЅ ohne Retuschen, mit dem Publikum Untergrund Flüstern und die Kommentare und Ausrufe der Musiker, in einem typischen Jazzkeller-Sound.
    Es handelt sich hier um ein historisches Dokument, das die Jazz Geschichte vom Neuenburg gegen Ende der siebziger Jahren darstellt und gleichzeitig ein Hommage an Denis Progin und Jean-Luc Parodi, gestorben bzw. im Jahr 1997 und 1999, verkörpert.

    “US R&B singer, sometimes refered to as “The Queen of Chicago Blues”. Born september 28, 1928, Bartlett, Tennessee. Dubbed “Koko” due to her love of chocolate. Discovered by Willie Dixon in 1962 leading to a contract with Chess. In close collaboration with Dixon she released several singles, including the 1965 “Wang Dang Doodle” previously recorded by Howlin’ Wolf. Not coincidental. Taylor’ had the most powerful vocal of the contemporary female Chess staplemates including Etta James, Mitty Collier and Irma Thomas and her shouting style had more in common with e.g. Big Mama Thornton and Howlin’ Wolf. Her 1969 selftitled debut album is mostly a compilation of her Chess singles. From 1975 and for more than 30 years she recorded for Alligator Records. Her 1985 album “Queen of the blues” won her a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album that year.     Trois ans après l’excellent Swing for bop, voilà Mistral, le nouvel album du guitariste hollandais Reinier Voet et de sa formation Pigalle44.
    Déjà, l’objet est élégant : un joli digipack, avec surtout à l’intérieur, un livret très complet comportant de nombreuses photos d’archives et une explication de Reinier pour chaque titre entendu sur l’album. Un tel luxe et une telle attention sont plutôt rares pour une autoprod’. D’autant qu’en prime, cerise sur le gâteau, un lumineux commentaire d’ Alain Antonietto himself vient éclairer l’auditeur quant au projet du disque…
    Il faut dire que ce disque, c’est un petit régal pour les djangophiles : Reinier Voet semble avoir pris un malin plaisir à dénicher quelques raretés au sein de sa collection de vinyls pour les tourner et les retourner à sa propre façon. Répertoire français, donc, où l’on convoquera quelques belles pointures : Crolla, Baro Ferret et Jo Privat, Jean-Pierre Sasson, Joseph Reinhardt et Jacques Verrières, et bien sûr le génial manouche Django Reinhardt, toujours dans des compositions inhabituelles. Clou du spectacle, un morceau inédit de Sarane Ferret intitulé Soir triste, jamais enregistré et dont la partition fut envoyée à Reiner par Antonietto. Et trois jolies compositions du leader viennent aussi parfaire ce programme particulièrement alléchant.
    Alléchant à plus d’un titre : le répertoire, on la vu (géniale idée que d’avoir ressorti cette petite merveille de Sidonie, chantée initialement par Bardot et reprise ici en bossa…). Et aussi le jeu de Reinier, qui dépasse largement le style dit “manouche”. Certes, notre ami guitariste joue sur une vieille Favino du père, parfois équipée d’un très agréable de Armond de 53, et on peut retrouver ça et là quelques jolies figures du style gitan. Mais avant tout, Reinier Voet est un superbe improvisateur, développant son propre discours qui rappelle autant Django que le bebop, la valse musette que la musique brésilienne ou la chanson… Bref un éclectisme assumé et rafraichissant, pour une musique originale, toujours passionnante à écouter…
    Une très belle réussite.
