Jimmy Rosenberg- The ONe and Only (2006)
with Bireli Lagrene and Angelo Debarre
Label Hot Club Records
Gypsy Swing Jazz Manouche
Record Originally released in 13 -15 december 1997
Years (2006)
Format Mp3 320 Kbps
Size 138 MB
Jimmy Rosenberg proves to be such a fluid acoustic guitarist on this frequently heated set that it is difficult to believe that he was only 17 at the time. His playing is very much in the tradition of Django Reinhardt yet he does not sound like a mere copy. Rosenberg teams up on this CD with fellow guitarist Angelo Debarre (who is on the same level), bassist Svein Aarbostad and (on seven of the 18 songs) guitarist Bireli Lagrene for a program of hard swinging numbers, many of which were associated with Django. The playing often borders on the miraculous with the highlights including such tunes as “Them There Eyes,” “Coquette,” “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love,” “Embraceable You,” “Donna Lee,” and “The Sheik of Araby.” Highly recommended.

JOHNNY VAN DERRICK HOT CLUB VOL 1-2
No Label No Info
Genre Gypsy Swing Jazz Manouche
Format Mp3 192 Kbps
Size
Johnny sadly died in 1994 aged 69 but has been a great influence on many rising jazz violin stars. He was not widely known to the British public, though his CV reads like a list in the WhoпїЅs Who of showbusiness. A close colleague of Michel LeGrand and Eartha Kitt, a long association with Peter Sellers and a life-long friend of the great guitarist Denny Wright. Johnny was prolific on the session scene of the 50s and 60s, playing the lead violin on the Pink Panther films amongst others and on numerous jingles, most notably for the Renault Clio (oooh Papa!). JohnnyпїЅs style was always swinging and always lyrical, as these two tracks show.
Date of Birth
11 August 1926
Date of Death
15 May 1995
Trivia
Jazz violinist
The Late Johnny van Derrick -
In performance van Derrick was an incomparable showman, whether pretending to make pizzicato notes come from the top of his bald head, or swapping quotes from the classics with the guitarist Denny Wright. Van Derrick was compared to Stephane Grappelli, whom he knew and admired, but his style was cleverer, his swing more strident, and his playing perhaps more influenced by Joe Venuti. It remains a great sadness that his unique combination of a virtuoso technique and a devilish swing did not quite reach the large public it deserved.
Van Derrick was born in 1926 and was introduced to music by his father, who was a fine cornet player. As a young boy he was sent to the Brussels Conservatoire, where he was awarded a silver medal, but his classical studies ended with the outbreak of the Second World War. He found work back in London touring Stoll Moss theatres with Louis MexanoпїЅs Accordion Band (пїЅeight tiny Italians with enormous instrumentsпїЅ) before joining the Merchant Navy and spending the rest of the war on the British convoys to Russia.
In the early post-war years van Derrick played trumpet for dance bands like Maurice WinnickпїЅs (пїЅthe sweetest music this side of heavenпїЅ) and Lou PreagerпїЅs. He couldnпїЅt keep away from the fiddle for long, however, and undertook six years of study with his mentor Sascha Lasserson. He joined the Halle Orchestra, but he found the working conditions dispiriting and returned to freelancing.

Stephane GRAPPELLY - Le Toit De Paris (1969)
Label: Bmg/RCA Records Label
Genre Gypsy Swing Jazz
Release Date1969
Recording DateOct 28, 1969
Format Mp3 320 Kbps
Size 80 MB
Reviewby Ken Dryden
Stephane Grappelli’s career was beginning to take off once again around the time of this 1969 session in Paris; the swinging violinist is accompanied by pianist Raymond Fol, guitarist Tony Ovio, bassist Jack Sewing, and drummer Andre Hartmann. While the leader and his pianist play rather well, the rest of the rhythm section is burdened by Ovio’s rather hackneyed accompaniment. The best tracks are the standards, including a very brisk “Rain Check” and “What Am I Here For” (the latter of which opens with a bit of pizzicato violin), as well as a breakneck “Tabou” (sometimes spelled “Taboo” or “Tabu” on other records). Less inspired are labored renditions of “I Got It Bad (And That Ain’t Good)” and “Time on My Hands.” One factor separating this date from the typical Grappelli release is the heavier concentration of original material; Grappelli contributed two fairly nondescript ballads (“Andree” and “Light”) and the intense swinger “Denise,” while Fol penned the bland ballad “Camelia” and a somewhat corny waltz, “Anna.” Fol switches to celeste on a couple of numbers, neither of which are particularly remarkable. An odd note on the back cover apologizes for using the original album cover art with the leader’s name misspelled Stephane Grappelly, which was actually the original spelling and the way he still signed autographs 20 years after the recording session! While this album (reissued on CD by RCA France in 1994) is hardly a prime example from Stephane Grappelli’s considerable discography, there are enough enjoyable tracks for swing fans to considering purchasing it.

Jazz in Paris – Jazz & Cinema vol. 4 (1954-1961)
Label Emarcy Universal Music France
Genre Jazz Swing
Released 2002
Format Mp3 320 Kbps
Size 104 MB
A wonderful collection of some very cool jazz recordings – all of them made for French films of the New Wave era, and rarely, if ever, reissued! The package is the 4th in this excellent Jazz & Cinema series within the larger Jazz In Paris line – and it’s actually the rarest of the bunch, with work that we’d never heard before on CD. Most tunes were originally issued only as singles or short 7” eps – a common format for French soundtracks, and the reason that many of them were rarely issued as albums – and although the sources are different, there’s a really unified feel to the material. Titles include “Touchez Pas Au Grisbi” and “Grisbi Blues” by Jean Wetzel, from the film Touchez Pas Au Grisbi; “No Hay Dinero Caballo”, “Va Ya Pa’Ti”, and “L’Espionnage” by Gonzalo Fernandez & Martial Solal, from the film Les Ennemis; “Sentimental Slow” by Martial Solal from the film Le Proces; “Cora”, “Patricia”, and “Amanda” by Alain Gourager from the film Le Piege; and “Generique”, “Le Ciel C’Est Toi”, and “Cha Cha De Cullera” by Michel De Villers from the film Le Saint Mene La Danse.

Name: Mark Knopfler & Chet Atkins
Album: Neck and Neck
Year: 1990
Bitrate: mp3 CBR 320
Weight: 77.44 MB

Olivarez Trio -Adieu,Bienville (2008)
Label : Autoproduction
Genre Gypsy Swing Jazz Manouche
Date de sortie : 2008
Format Mp3 192 Kbps
Size 46 MB
Fan’s of Matelot Ferret’s epochal double album Tziganskaia or Angelo Debarre’s groundbreaking Gypsy Guitars would do well to keep an eye out for the upcoming release of Adieu, Bienville from Charlottesville, Virginia’s Olivarez Trio. Lead guitarist Rick Olivarez has obviously done his homework, and his love of the older waltzes, csardas, and Eastern European strains of Jazz Manouche gives rise here to a surprising new album that draws less on the jazz and more on the manouche.
Due out on August 8th, the disc includes older valses (Choti, Dolores) alongside pieces like Folklore Hongrois, Mademoiselle de Bucharest and the Django tune Double Whisky. Interspersed throughout are originals composed in the spirit of Ferret and Tchan-Tchou Vidal; highly dramatic works evocative of a time past, tunes like Adieu, Bienville and the wistful, elegiac Valse Sans Maris sound like small gems only recently rediscovered. (In that way, Reinhardt’s Double Whisky feels a bit out of place—a slightly too modern rhythm changes tune that doesn’t play to Olivarez’s considerable strengths. I’d have much preferred another of his delightful originals in its place.)
Holding down the rhythm are guitarist Jeff Cheers and bassist Steve Riggs, who provide a solid, steady bed for Olivarez’s soaring melodies. But Adieu, Bienville—to its great credit—mostly feels like an ensemble effort, a recording of like-minded musicians who have been together a while, and have gotten to know each other through music. It’s not, despite the musicianship on display, a ‘guitar hero’ record, but one more concerned with showing us the oft-overlooked value of our own musical past, and it succeeds, showing that quality has no expiration date.

Djivilli Quintet - Give me Five (2005)
Label : Autoproduction
Genre Gypsy Swing Jazz Manouche
Years 2005
Format Mp3 320 Kbps
Size 66 MB
Certains morceaux souffrent quand même de problèmes de mise en place guitare/violons comme “There Will Never Be Another You”. La version d’“Ill see you in my dreams” violon/guitare en extrait est d’ailleurs un bel hommage à Django.
