Le festival Django Reinhardt a été créé en 2000 et c’est, depuis lors, un évènement annuel, démontrant combien le style musical de Django fut (et est) spécial aussi bien que le brillant talent des artistes qui s’y vouent. Le génie artistique et la virtuosité de ces musiciens les rangent parmi les meilleurs du monde.L’apport aux grands du jazz américain de musiciens européens donne une nouvelle et excitante dimension. L’année où ce CD fut enregistré est l’une des meilleures par la participation de musiciens exceptionnels. Cet enregistrement redonne la magie et l’électricité de cette combinaison.

The Django Reinhardt Festival has been a terrific series at Birdland for fans of gypsy swing as heard in this compilation of live sets. Two strong performers, either Angelo Debarre or Dorado Schmitt, play lead guitar, backed by a potent, alternating cast of supporting musicians including clarinetist Ken Peplowski, bassists Jay Leonhart or Jon Burr (the latter an alum of Stéphane Grappelli’s band), Grady Tate (on brushes) and accordion player Ludovic Beier , among others. The performances keep the music fresh rather than simply rendering them as museum-piece re-creations. They explore standards from the 1930s and both Django Reinhardt’s timeless compositions and lesser-known works with equal enthusiasm to appreciative crowds, who manage to somehow restrain themselves rather than drown out the ends of solos with loud reactions. Schmitt offers a flashy interpretation of “Nuages” and proves to be just as accomplished on violin in a romp through “Stompin’ at Decca,” while Debarre’s lively picking in the delightful treatment of “I Can’t Give You Anything but Love” is just as enticing. The final track features electric guitarist Babik Reinhardt (Django’s son) playing a more modern-sounding original with electric violinist Florin Niculescu, pianist Pete Malinverni, bassist Jon Burr, and drummer Leroy Williams, so the flavor of this track is more traditional swing versus gypsy swing. The only shortcoming of the CD is tenor saxophonist James Carter, who appears on several songs and has a tendency to showboat too much at times by alternating between a big sound akin to Coleman Hawkins and needless squealing. Yet even Carter’s occasional detours into dissonance don’t provide that much of a distraction from these swinging live sessions. ~ Ken Dryden

Johnny sadly died in 1994 aged 69 but has been a great influence on many rising jazz violin stars. He was not widely known to the British public, though his CV reads like a list in the WhoпїЅs Who of showbusiness. A close colleague of Michel LeGrand and Eartha Kitt, a long association with Peter Sellers and a life-long friend of the great guitarist Denny Wright. Johnny was prolific on the session scene of the 50s and 60s, playing the lead violin on the Pink Panther films amongst others and on numerous jingles, most notably for the Renault Clio (oooh Papa!). JohnnyпїЅs style was always swinging and always lyrical, as these two tracks show.

The Late Johnny van Derrick -

In performance van Derrick was an incomparable showman, whether pretending to make pizzicato notes come from the top of his bald head, or swapping quotes from the classics with the guitarist Denny Wright. Van Derrick was compared to Stephane Grappelli, whom he knew and admired, but his style was cleverer, his swing more strident, and his playing perhaps more influenced by Joe Venuti. It remains a great sadness that his unique combination of a virtuoso technique and a devilish swing did not quite reach the large public it deserved.

Van Derrick was born in 1926 and was introduced to music by his father, who was a fine cornet player. As a young boy he was sent to the Brussels Conservatoire, where he was awarded a silver medal, but his classical studies ended with the outbreak of the Second World War. He found work back in London touring Stoll Moss theatres with Louis MexanoпїЅs Accordion Band (пїЅeight tiny Italians with enormous instrumentsпїЅ) before joining the Merchant Navy and spending the rest of the war on the British convoys to Russia.

In the early post-war years van Derrick played trumpet for dance bands like Maurice WinnickпїЅs (пїЅthe sweetest music this side of heavenпїЅ) and Lou PreagerпїЅs. He couldnпїЅt keep away from the fiddle for long, however, and undertook six years of study with his mentor Sascha Lasserson. He joined the Halle Orchestra, but he found the working conditions dispiriting and returned to freelancing.

Lovely work from Henri Crolla—possibly France’s greatest jazz guitarist in the post-Django Reinhardt years ! The package features a wealth of rare 50s material by Crolla—all of which perfectly showcase his sensitive, thoughtful approach to the guitar—a sound that’s almost a precursor of the styles that Baden Powell would record on the French scene a decade later, and a mode that uses the instrument in a much less rhythmically-driven way than some of Henri’s predecessors. The first CD features two full albums recorded for the Vega label—Le Long Des Rues and Bonsoire Cherie—both of which features Crolla’s guitar in front of larger orchestrations, but backings that are still used with enough sensitivity to let the guitar come through strongly. Disc 2 starts with the haunting C’Est Pour Toi Que Je Joue album—a solo guitar set recorded in 1967, relatively early for the genre, and putting Crolla firmly in the company of Laurindo Almeida, Luiz Bonfa, and other Brazilian-bred soloists. The remainder of that disc features rare soundtrack work by Crolla (a key sub-category of his recording career)tracks from the films Histoire D’Un Poisson Rouge, Voulez Vous Danser Avec Moi, Montand E Mouloudji, and Saint-Tropez Blues. The package features a whopping 44 tracks in all, and is a great look at this overlooked genius !

Universal Music propose dans la collection Jazz in Paris un double CD regroupant des morceaux d’Henri Crolla ou “Mille-pattes” comme le prénommait Jacques Prévert. Ce guitariste discret, d’origine italienne, côtoya les grandes figures artistiques de Paris des années 50, accompagnant Yves Montant, jouant avec Django… Le premier CD comprend, et porte le nom, du LP 25 cm “Le Long des Rues” (voir la chronique du LP) qui remporta en 1957 le Grand Prix du Disque Charles Cros et du LP “Bonsoir Chérie” enregistré en 1957. C’est de la douceur à l’état pur. Légèreté et délicatesse représentative des ambiances d’après guerre qui vont marquer à tout jamais Paris. Celle des photographes humanistes, de Saint Germain, La Coupole ...
Mais c’est sur le second volume qu’apparaissent les surprises. Car si le premier regroupe des titres connus, Universal a la bonne idée de compléter cette réédition d’un album très personnel et moins connu de Crolla enregistré en 1957 “C’est pour toi que je joue”. Seul à la guitare Selmer, sans artifice, il va poser un phrasé, un touché sensible. Mélant technique - sans jamais faire de démonstration - et inspiration, il interprète 13 compositions. “Mille-pattes” nous prouve qu’il n’est pas uniquement possible de battre des records de tempo avec une “guitare manouche” ;-).
Le second CD se termine par 11 titres inédits, esquisses inédites écrites pour le cinéma et rassemblées par Colette Crolla. Ces morceaux permettent entr’apercevoir comment Henri Crolla composait ses morceaux. “Voulez vous danser avec moi ?” composé pour le film éponyme et destiné à Brigitte Bardot est un bel exemple (même si Henri n’est pas le meilleur chanteur) de la gaité du compositeur.
Bref un double CD qui retrace bien toute la personnalité du personnage. Une référence !

La Chronique de Mr Blue : En attendant mon café j’ai entendu une guitare mais pas seulement ; en attendant mon steak, j’ai entendu une guitare manouche, mais pas seulement. Approche intéressante que de surprendre son monde, ceci est d’autant plus vrai quand le minimalisme est de mise. Prenez l’exemple des fils Canouche, groupe lavallois de Jazz manouche. Pas de chanteur, organe très intéressant pour ce qui est de créer des variations, style musical connoté, que l’inconscient collectif cantonne à guitare acoustique, batterie feutrée et certains cuivres… bref pas de quoi accrocher le quidam peut enclin à titiller ce style musical. Et pourtant. Et pourtant dès le nom du groupe (contraction de caniche et manouche) et les titres de leur dernier opus, » en attendant mon steak » (notez les approximations contrôlées ou les jeux de mots assumés qui montrent qu’en absence de texte, le groupe a du verbe, en tout cas de l’humour), on peut s’apercevoir que ce groupe a du chien, en tout cas un certain flair à sortir le jazz manouche des frontières où on le parque. Au delà de l’humour, très visible sur scène, le style dénote. Bien sûr que la ligne de base est une rythmique connue (Martine à la plage) mais les terres hispaniques ne sont pas le seul paysage visité ou alors dans un mélange de couleurs musicales (Tangone et ses influences…tango). Non, ce groupe sait voyager, en l’occurrence sur les plaines américaines avec un son légèrement rockabilly (Shemale Badi) mais surtout sur le Haut Atlas, tant les influences et sonorités arabisantes sont manifestes (Tabadabada, Le thon des pharaons). Oui les fils Canouche surprennent, à l’instar encore du dernier titre où l’électrique s’invite au voyage (En attendant mon steak), et il n’y a pas à aboyer outre mesure. Finalement au lieu d’un café je devrais plutôt prendre un thé à la menthe, en attendant…

C’est en 2000 que Karim et Laurent se rencontrent. Ils travaillent tous les deux au même endroit et se retrouvent de temps en temps le soir pour partager leur passion commune pour la guitare. Inspirés par le swing de la musique manouche, ils se montent un petit répertoire. En 2003 après un bouche à oreilles favorable les deux compères commencent à jouer dans les hotels, les bars, la rue, et tous les endroits qui les accueillent. Ils décident alors de tenter l’aventure musicale et quittent tous deux leur boulot. Vers 2005, Cyril, “The contrebassiste”, se joint au groupe. Après une après midi de répète, le troisième homme les accompagne pour un premier concert en trio le soir même. Puis, au détour d’une soirée ils rencontrent Mathias, le violoniste, et lui propose de venir boeuffer lors d’une prochaine soirée. Une semaine plus tard, premier concert du Swing d’O quartet. Ils auront la chance de rencontrer des groupes comme Samarabalouf, Sansévérino, Padam ou encore Titi robin dont ils feront les premières parties. Depuis, le Swing d’O quartet continue de proposer sa musique aux oreilles bien tendues. Un premier album de compos est sorti en 2009 et le prochain est attendu pour 2011/2012… donc avant la fin du monde, si tout va bien.

Sur fond de jazz et de chanson française, Swing d’O vous présente une musique douce et entraînante. Le groupe est né en 2004, à l’initiative de sa chanteuse, Céline, et de ses deux guitaristes, Raph et JB. D’autres instrumentistes ont depuis rejoint le trio, contribuant à l’élaboration d’un répertoire riche et varié, alternant des standards du jazz swing, des mélodies de Django Reinhardt, de la valse et de la chanson française.
