Great violin playing with marvelous sonics
Lara St. John, relatively a new comer from Canada has turned out a great album with Gypsy. Not all of the selections are genuine gypsy melodies, but they all derive from gypsy inspirations. A highlight of this album is the Sarasate classic. If you thought Heifetz owns this piece, listen to Lara. She is just as good, if not better! Bold statement, yes, and she does not have the deep tone, since her violin was made in 1996, but nonetheless, it is a riveting performance. My personal favorite is the Kriesler selection. One of the best performances of La Giatana ever. I like ElmanпїЅs performance, slightly slower and a superior tone, but St. JohnпїЅs version is filled with such fire and spirit, that it gives a more satifying performance than Elman. Must buy!!

Lara St. John often displays her anatomy on her CD covers, but she has more to offer than that. In this entertaining collection, she plays freely and on a very large scale, just what gypsy music requires. It may not take much intellect to play WaxmanпїЅs Carmen Fantasy (I like SarasateпїЅs better, anyway). But it does take intellect, and lots more, to play BartókпїЅs Second Rhapsody as convincingly as she does here, with the very assertive collaboration of Ilan Rechtman. St. John doesnпїЅt make the difficulties of Ravel and Sarasate sound easy, but both musicians play with such flair it doesnпїЅt matter. RechtmanпїЅs gypsy arrangements are goofy and enjoyable. Mais lorsquпїЅil crée et enregistre (le 31 mars 1942) ce fameux Nymphéas, la plus ouvertement пїЅimpressionnisteпїЅ de ses compositions, lпїЅexposition Monet-Rodin qui sпїЅest tenue à lпїЅOrangerie deux ans plus tôt (en 1940) nпїЅa probablement pas échappé à son exceptionnelle curiosité artistique.
