One of the funkiest albums ever from Junior Parker – a great little set that shows he had a lot more to offer than just the average bluesman! The album’s got a nice little soul sound in the backings – tight rhythms from Horace Ott, who nicely avoids a lot of the cliches that the blues business was hitting at the time – in order to keep Junior in hip territory that’s filled with breaking drums and heavy basslines! There’s a few key crossover tracks here, plus some surprisingly sweeter numbers – and the album’s a gem through and through – well-appreciated by new generations over the years, thanks to its diversity of tracks! Titles include a great break version of “Taxman” – plus two more Beatles numbers, “Tomorrow Never Knows” and “Lady Madonna” – and the tracks “Outside Man”, “Darling Depend On Me”, “You Know I Love You”, “River’s Invitation”, and “Just To Hold My Hand”. In the liner notes to Six String Evolution, Oberg states that the date features songs that fit his style - My opinion, of his style? He burns tastefully with a Bebop-singe over many genres. The material is diverse, featuring archtop, electric fusion and nylon string guitar-work on a variety of jazz and pop tunes. One of the many great things about the CD is that, even with the changes in instrumentation and style, there is a continuity of thought and vibe that make it easy to listen from beginning to end. Sadly, Oberg’s chops make me contemplate using my L-5 for firewood…He’s soooo good!

Andreas Oberg’s “Six String Evolution” CD features a host of fine players including Oberg on electric and acoustic guitars plus vocals on “Papa Gato” (penned by L.A.‘s own Poncho Sanchez). Blue Note released the two-volume Blue Break Beats compilation in the early ‘90s. The music on Blue Break Beats dates from the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, when a large portion of Blue Note’s soul-jazz artists began experimenting with funk and rock, creating dense electric fusions that concentrated on rhythm, not improvisation. None of this music has ever received much critical praise from jazz purists, but in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, scores of hip-hop and dance DJs discovered these old records and began sampling the original tracks to use in new rap and dance songs. By the early ‘90s, this jazz-rap-funk fusion had become hip and profitable, which led Blue Note to assemble the Blue Break Beats compilations. All of the tracks on the two discs are from late ‘60s and early ‘70s albums, featuring multi-layered percussion, organs, and guitars. Every song on the two discs—which are sold separately—is hot, with a deep funky groove, and there are no dull spots on the albums. Though it’s designed to appeal to fans of contemporary funk and rap, fans of rock-influenced soul-jazz will find Blue Break Beats a necessary purchase.
