An updated approach to music inspired by the Great Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli and the Quintet of the Hotclub of France.

The Coolville Hot Club, based in Athens, Ohio, first got together to play music inspired by the great gypsy swing music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. Jeff Carr and Art Werger have played together for many years; Mark Burhans (a member of the nationally touring contemporary contradance band Hotpoint Stringband) joined them in 2005, and upright bassist Michael Sisson signed on in early 2007.  Emily Burhans, Mark’s daughter, began singing with them in 2008.  The band has since branched out a bit and their repertoire now includes the music of artists ranging from Jobim to John Lennon.

Pour les amateurs des boeufs parisiens et notamment de la Locandiera, les têtes et le swing des musiciens de l’Aurore Quartet ne vous seront pas inconnus. Ils ont, seuls ou en totalité, pointé leur nez dans la cave des boeufs de la rue Oberkampf. Aurore Voilqué habitant dans les parages y apporte souvent son violon ainsi que Darko Andelkovic qui y mène régulièrement le drive. Pour cet album autoproduit, les couleurs des morceaux sont variées. Les reprises de Django cotoient les ambiances Tzigane (Czardas), Russe (Sosnica) ou classique avec une interprétation très libre du Concerto de Bach avec une belle complicité des violons (Aurélien Trigo étant passé par là). Ce qui frappe sur ce CD, c’est le temps que prend le groupe pour poser les thèmes et solos. Pas de précipitations. La recherche est dans les phrases et l’espace entre les notes que dans un concours de vitesse. Ce qui permet d’apprécier les qualités mélodiques des solistes. Aurore planant au dessus des guitares de Darko au phrasé très pur et aéré et Ziggy avec un placement rythmique volontairement déroutant. Les trois solistes prenent également chacun le chant, mention spéciale à Ziggy avec une version étonnante de Sweet Sue.
Premier volet réussi pour ce groupe prometteur. Mention spéciale pour le travail graphique de la pochette.

Voilà une galette qui aura mis du temps à sortir mais qui mérite une oreille attentive. Bertie Cortez, acteur, meneur de revue aux « Folies Bergères » entre autre, avait la chance de posséder une voix puissante de crooner. En sortant de « La nouvelle Éve » à Pigalle, il avait pris l’habitude de se rendre « A la roue fleurie », haut lieu de la musique tzigane et du jazz de 1985 à 1990. C’est dans ce restaurant, tenu par Serge Camps, qu’un certain Angelo Debarre rodait ces premiers solos aux couleurs tziganes. C’est d’ailleurs à cette époque aussi que sortira le CD « Gypsy guitars » avec Angelo, Serge Camps et Franck Anastasio, un incontournable du jazz manouche aujourd’hui.
