The quintet Cafe Jam hails from Sao Paulo, and their release is perfect listening for a summer’s day picnic, smooth jazz with just a pinch of the tropical. Included among the twelve tunes are two Jobim compositions, “Passarim,” featuring Paulo Pascali, Jr., on tenor, and “Samba do Aviao.” Pascali’s tenor, and the overall high level of musicianship, is good reason to keep from dismissing this release as just another smooth jazz entry.

Pascali composed two tunes, pianist Marcelo Zanettini three tunes, bassist Yoshiya Kusamura two tunes, including the eponymous “Cafe Jam,” and guitarist Benoit Decharneux two tunes. The group’s musical influences include Spyro Gyra, the Yellowjackets, Earth Wind & Fire, Weather Report, and a host of other fusion, pop, and even disco artists. Basically, you’d be hard pressed to identify Cafe Jam as Brazilian but for the Portuguese song titles. But it’s very well done, and if you’re planning a picnic by the lake…

Cristina Braga (Rio de Janeiro, 1966) is a Brazilian harpist who started her musical career as a soloist of the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira and Orquestra Sinfônica Pró-Música da Petrobrás. Since 1993, she has been the principal harpist with the Municipal Theatre Symphony Orchestra of Rio de Janeiro. Her passion for her instrument has taken her to cover both classical and popular music. A final release from Astor Piazzolla, recorded shortly before his death and edited for release following notes that he left behind. The work stems largely from a session in the BBC studios, and also from a recording session in Germany. The playing is wonderful here — all of the pieces fit well together. The piano is especially brash, courtesy of Gerardo Gandini. One other notable item here: the inclusion of a second bandoneon to work with Piazzolla’s own in the sextet. For fans of Piazzolla, this is a wonderful album. The album’s a solo set – and most of the tracks are fairly dark, with a spare haunting sound that recalls some of Baden’s European work, but with an approach that’s older and more mature – hinting a bit at the sound that Powell would hit more strongly in his late years.
