Quatorzième album solo de la diva fantasque du punk allemand, Nina Hagen. Accompagnée par le Capital Dance Orchestra, l’artiste y reprend des standards du jazz, interprétés en allemand et en anglais
What is obviously a very ambitious effort on Ninas part, she brings to life a collection of songs spanning from the early 1920s to the early 1950s, done in the ‘swing’ style along with the amazing Capital Dance Orchestra. Nina sounds wonderful (a vocal coach is credited in the booklet by the way) and is having a great time here. She makes these songs hers in true Nina Hagen fashion and is having fun with them. Whether its the very rousing ‘Bei Mir Bist Du Schon’ ‘Flat Foot Floogie’ ‘Yes Sir’ or ‘Halli Hallo’, or the more meloncholy ‘But Not For Me’ or ‘Happiness(done both in German and English versions)’. After her unusual departure in “Big Band Explosion” I was a little surprised to see her do another collection of ‘vintage’ music. But this time around she kicks it up a few notches and really hits the nail on the head. If you liked “Big Band Explosion” then you will love “Irgendwo Auf Der Welt”. I highly recommend this CD of very infectious music that Nina has made timeless. The CD also comes in a very nifty ‘super jewel box’ jewel case, and includes a glossy booklet with lots of great pictures of Nina, plus all the lyrics to the songs. Buy and enjoy!!

The quintet Cafe Jam hails from Sao Paulo, and their release is perfect listening for a summer’s day picnic, smooth jazz with just a pinch of the tropical. Included among the twelve tunes are two Jobim compositions, “Passarim,” featuring Paulo Pascali, Jr., on tenor, and “Samba do Aviao.” Pascali’s tenor, and the overall high level of musicianship, is good reason to keep from dismissing this release as just another smooth jazz entry.
Pascali composed two tunes, pianist Marcelo Zanettini three tunes, bassist Yoshiya Kusamura two tunes, including the eponymous “Cafe Jam,” and guitarist Benoit Decharneux two tunes. The group’s musical influences include Spyro Gyra, the Yellowjackets, Earth Wind & Fire, Weather Report, and a host of other fusion, pop, and even disco artists. Basically, you’d be hard pressed to identify Cafe Jam as Brazilian but for the Portuguese song titles. But it’s very well done, and if you’re planning a picnic by the lake…

Review by Thom Jurek
Tenor and soprano saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr. was faced with an almost impossible task in 1976: following up his two 1975 critically acclaimed and wildly successful commercial recordings Mister Magic and Feels So Good. Both recordings crossed over to R&B on the radio and on the charts. A Secret Place was produced by Creed Taylor and issued on his Kudu imprint, while the versatile David Matthews arranged the horn section. The players include pianist Dave Grusin, drummer Harvey Mason, Ralph MacDonald on percussion, bassist Anthony Jackson, guitarist Eric Gale, trumpeter John Gatchell, and alto saxophonist Gerry Niewood. Guests include bassist George Mraz and guitarist Steve Khan, who appear only on a reading of Herbie Hancock’s “Dolphin Dance.”

Artist: David Sanborn
Title Of Album: Promise Me the Moon
Year Of Release: 1976
Label: Warner Bros
Genre: Smooth Jazz
Format: MP3
Quality: 320 kbps I 44.1 Khz I Joint Stereo
Total Time: 00:37:08
Total Size: 89 mb
David Sanborn’s third album as a leader has him steering away from the N.Y.C. neo-bop, skunk funk, Seventh Avenue style he helped co-found with the Brecker Brothers band. That it is recorded in Miami speaks volumes about the sunny attitude and less jazz-oriented music he is fomenting. Guitarist/vocalist Hiram Bullock and emerging electric bass guitar star Mark Egan have something to do with this, but the extraordinary drummer Victor Lewis is the one who gives this music an R&B heft while also adding Latin flavors, like boogaloo on growth hormones. Keyboardist Rosalinda DeLeon, percussionist Jumma Santos, and four female vocalists help with the sexy Afro-Caribbean underpinning, while Sanborn plays his trusty St. Louis soul vibrato-drenched alto sax, and also experiments with sopranino sax and the lyricon. The album yields mixed results—including some spectacular, fervent music, with the tamer sounds more likely to appeal to crossover or pop audiences. Clearly James Taylor is an influence on this music, as his guitarist Danny Kortchmar contributes tunes like the forgettable pop-funk of the title track with Bullock’s vocals; “Stranger’s Arms,” where Sanborn painfully takes a shot at singing; and the band’s not bad, slow, loping, Latin-tinged instrumental version of Taylor’s “Benjamin.” Bullock’s two compositions are “We Fool Ourselves,” reverting to the chunky, funky street-smart samba beat with Sanborn’s rambling alto, though the singing is not helpful, and “The Rev,” a slowed soul song more suited to the R&B aspect of the combo’s demeanor. Then to the good stuff, as Egan’s “Heart Lake” is a road song with Sanborn’s sopranino paving the way via Egan’s ostinato line after a spacy free intro. DeLeon’s “Morning Salsa” is early tropicalia at its best, a fun tune that moves along briskly, but makes you wonder why the keyboardist was never heard from after this date—maybe just a fling? Then there’s “The Legend of Cheops,” a stunning piece penned by Lewis that also showed up in the repertoire of Woody Shaw during the drummer’s tenure with the trumpeter. Here it’s charged with electricity from the wafting keyboardist and punchy, hip bassist, as Sanborn’s swirling sopranino provides all the dynamism and depth he is capable of, while also negotiating some tricky key and time changes—a memorable track for sure. While not as much a breakthrough as the two previous albums, Taking Off and Sanborn, Promise Me the Moon laid the groundwork for Sanborn to become a successful commercial money-maker and reliable production musician or soloist instead of the creative—and at times innovative—player hinted at in many instances here during the turning point of his career. ~ Michael G. Review by Scott Yanow
Grover Washington Jr. made his mark early on with hit recordings for Kudu and Motown. After he switched to Elektra, the soulful saxophonist debuted on the label with Paradise, a decent but not overly memorable effort. Washington (on soprano, tenor, flute and baritone) plays quite well as do the members of his septet (which include violinist John Blake, guitarist Richard Steacker and bassist Tyrone Brown) but the material (seven group originals) failed to include any really catchy melodies or strong hits. This date is therefore more for Grover Washington completists than for general fans of the idiom. Washington’s next project would be his best-selling Winelight.

Artists: John Abercrombie, Don Thompson
Album: Witchcraft
Label: Justin Time (16)
Year: 1991
Genre: Jazz, smooth, Standards, Guitar-bass duets
Format: FLAC
Time: 59:46
Size: ~198MB incl. 3% recovery (2 files)
For followers who bemoan guitarist John Abercrombie’s tendency to record rather adventurous albums with an often electronically treated tone, Witchcraft will be a delight. On this duo recording with bassist Don Thompson (who also plays piano on three tracks), the guitarists’ sound is untreated, and the repertoire is standards. The two play well together, and there are some lovely moments on the record. The title track finds Abercrombie using the differing tonal qualities of his guitar’s open strings to give the melody a unique interpretation. The sole original on the record, “Fall Colours” (credited to both writers, although the Canadian spelling may reveal the true author), is based on the standard “Autumn Leaves.” Abercrombie sounds fine here, if at times pretty rather than substantial. He prefers to play in long single-note lines, rather than taking the more chordal approach many guitarists attempt in such a stripped-down setting. Thompson is a highly interactive bass player with enviable technique, allowing him to play melodic, fluid solos throughout. ~Dan Cross, AMG

Guitarist Joe Pass and bassist Niels Pedersen, a pair of talented virtuosi, are typically outstanding on this live set of standards. With the exception of their ad-lib “Blues for the Hague,” all of the material would qualify as overdone through the years (such as “‘Round Midnight” and “Stella by Starlight”) but the duo makes these veteran pieces sound fresh and new again. ~Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

While it’s true that Grover Washington, Jr.‘s first album as a leader was the wonderful Inner City Blues album on Creed Taylor’s Kudu label, the sessions included here predate it and feature Washington Jr. in the role of sideman to Charles Earland, Johnny “Hammond” Smith, Boogaloo Joe Jones, and Leon Spencer Jr.. The nine cuts included here were recorded between September 1970 and August 1971. Most of them are straight-ahead blowing B-3 dates where the emphasis on groove and grit is equal and pervasive. While there isn’t a weak track here and Washington’s playing is deeper in the register than in his later material, there is one irritating factor about the assemblage of the album. Rather than place all of Washington’s work with a particular leader in one place, such as all the Boogaloo Joe Jones tracks in one place, the producers have elected to go with the timeworn path of least resistance and arrange them chronologically. While there is an argument that can be made for a player’s development over time, there is another to make for the work a musician does with a particular leader. And this is where the disparity comes in here. While the scorching funk and groove of “No Way,” with Jones, gets the disc off to a hot start (with Bernard Purdie on drums, Sonny Phillips on organ, and Jimmy Lewis on bass) with its rolling eights, it is contrasted on the follow-up with “Between the Sheets,” with Smith leading the date (and James Clark on guitars, Lewis on bass, and Eddie Gee on skins). While Washington’s solo is notable here for its smoother and silky delivery, it stands in sharp contrast to the previous track, and on and on. Thankfully, the Earland track “Killer Joe,” with its wailing counterpoint between the leader and his saxophonist, is saved for last since there is simply no other track to follow it. This is a small complaint, however, as the material here is strictly top-shelf, full of sweat, raw groove, and greasy funk. This isn’t a package job for quick cash, but a revealing portrait of an amazingly soulful and talented soloist who walked in the door in 1970 in full possession of his voice with clear directions on how to get around on his instrument.

The music on this album is very communicative, melodic, easy-to-listen. Songs comprise original comnpositions but also improvisations on medieval song, Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit or Komeda’s Svantetic. The music is very coherent, rewarding and delivered with best possible quality. And in Poland it sold like hell reaching in a span of weeks double platinium status. Excellent proposal for all who like beautiful music that has true jazz heart, free and improvising, but still is closer to popular tastes rather than avant-garde..
