As spage age bachelor pad music goes, this is among the goofiest and edgiest. This 14-song survey is heavy on two aspects of the cocktail kitsch genre: then-futuristic, now-primitive synthesizer squawks (Richard Hayman, Dick Hyman, Perrey-Kingsley) and double entendre sexual innuedos. Sometimes that double entendre was vocal, as in Julie London’s “Hot Toddy,” or Mel Henke’s ridiculous “The Lively Ones” (some of whose dialogue is delivered by Herschel Bernardi). Sometimes the titles of the instrumentals sufficed by themselves (Les Baxter’s “Lust,” Jerry Murad’s “Music to Watch Girls By,” Hyman’s “The Topless Dancers of Corfu”). And there are old space age pop standbys like Latin rhythms, stereophonic experimentation, exotica, and mutation of time-honored pop standards worked in. This compilation may not be long on consistency, but on the other hand the track selection is very good, assembling some of the most amusing, fun, and adventurous cocktail music available.

Contemporary jazz that anyone could like, characterised by strong yet open themes, unshowy brilliance and an overall mood of soulfulness and sensitivity. For his third album, French/African drummer Katché has assembled an unusual but effective cast of musicians, with Tore Brunborg on sax, Jason Rebello on piano and Pino Palladino on bass. Playing at Maybeck Recital Hall before a small but attentive crowd seems to bring out the best in many pianists. Stanley Cowell performs a well-planned program of 14 selections on this 1990 CD. On a two-minute “Softly as in a Morning Sunrise,” Cowell runs through all twelve keys. He pays tribute to the stride-piano tradition on “Stompin’’ at the Savoy,” explores some bop, Latin-jazz (a transformed “Autumn Leaves”) and post bop music, plays “Jitterbug Waltz” in the style of Art Tatum, inteprets “Stella by Starlight” in 5/4 time and performs J.J. Johnson’‘s “Lament” with just his left hand. A very interesting recital.

By the late 1970s, Kenny Drew had migrated to Europe, where he recorded extensively. This live trio date with the superb bassist Niels Pedersen and guitarist Phillip Catherine is worth looking for. “Django” opens with a lyrical Catherine acoustic solo before Drew and Pedersen take a bluesy detour. “Here’‘s That Rainy Day” is given a lengthy workout, while the leader’‘s “Sunset” opens with a meandering theme before evolving into a gentle ballad. The romping interplay within “Blues In the Closet” and “On Green Dolphin Street” close the performance with a flourish. ~Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

This recording may be out of print but it’‘s worth going out of your way to find. Zeitlin and Haden communicate beautifully throughout, with lyrical passages alternating with long, semi-abstract bass solos (particularly on the first cut, “Chairman Mao.”) The recording is done live in front of a small audience, with excellent production values (somewhat reminiscent of Oscar Peterson’‘s “Exclusively for My Friends” recordings for MPS in the sixties). Zeitlin is not very well known but has lately re-emerged as a very dynamic player in the Bill Evans/Fred Hersch/Mulgrew Miller tradition. (Source: Customer review at amazon.com)
