Recorded in Sweden, ‘Dark is the Sun’ is a concept album based on themes and variations by British pianist/composer/arranger Greg Foat, who has created an intriguing blend of non-contemporary jazz sounds with classic scoring techniques. An exotic array of unorthodox instrumentation was utilized, including harpsichord, tubular bells and a 15 piece choir. With musical reference and influence from such luminaries as Bruno Nicolai, Michel Legrand and Serge Gainsbourg as well as a firm nod towards UK jazzmen Michael Garrick, Keith Mansfield and Alan Hawkshaw, the result is highly-listenable, enduring and fulfilling for those who like real music played with real instruments.

To mark the 100th anniversary of Django Reinhardt, Citel offers us a box video in tribute to Django Reinhardt. The goal is to gather as much information to better understand the life of the great gypsy. Program 4 DVD with 6 videos - including Django Legacy, Paul Paviot film, Children of Django, a story about Patrick Saussois, a concert by the Rosenberg Trio, an interview ... Sanseverino, 6 Django ... Brief heavy!
To achieve this DVD, Alexandre Darmon, a former collaborator of Fanck Hagège, has compiled a selection of outstanding films and often forgotten about the life of Django. Little regret (but really light) damage on this occasion not to have grouped all the available videos of Django.
- The landmark film “Django Reinhardt” (1957)
. This film by Paul Paviot found traces the life of Django through a simple and moving story. For this he will ask the relatives of Django to testify. You can see Joseph Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli, Babik Reinhardt, Eugene Vees, Alix Combelle ... Yves Montand is who lends his voice to the comments written by Chris Marker.

Scenes have become cult especially during festival Samois See previous column. Sacha Distel handles comments. . Movie very endearing, very subtle. A great opportunity to find this musician whose swing is sorely missed today. Unpublished (only released in June 2006 Mezzo).

Cette semaine sort sur les écrans le nouveau film de Tony Gatlif, Liberté, qui a pour sujet la vie des tsiganes sous l’occupation, leur internement dès l’automne 1940 et leur déportation vers les camps d’extermination nazis.
Rappelons qu’au moins 220.000 tsiganes sont morts dans ces camps, c’est à dire entre 25 et 50% de tous les tziganes vivant en Europe avant la guerre.
Un film plus que nécessaire, donc.
Synopsis :
1943 : Malgré les directives de l’occupant, un village accueille une famille Tsigane avec son chef de clan - une femme - et son « héros », Taloche, un bohémien fantasque encore enfant dans sa tête et Petit Claude, un orphelin « gadjo » qu’ils ont recueilli. Dans leur périple, ils sont aidés par des justes comme Théodore, le maire du village ou Mademoiselle Lundi, institutrice et employée de mairie.
A noter que le petit Levis Adel, arrière petit fils de Django et guitariste lui aussi apparait dans le film.

Though it may seem unlikely that Frank Zappa had much of an influence on the work of Lalo Schifrin, one can detect some cultural crossover on There’s a Whole Lalo Schifrin Goin’ On. Schifrin was as much a jazz-pop genius as ever, but on this album rock rhythms, musical satire, sound effects, and exotica are all used as camp in a way that is eerily reminiscent of Zappa’s more thoughtful efforts. Schifrin being Schifrin, every cut has a distinct and catchy melody, but there are whimsical and satirical themes embedded in the music. Nowhere is this more obvious than in “Hawks Vs. Doves,” in which a cheery carnival-like theme is played in counterpoint to a martial air, each interfering with the other. Elsewhere, Schifrin uses unusual percussion, dissonance, and tense, sonically fragmented piano to create soundscapes that are unlike most of the rest of his work. “Secret Code” integrates tabla drums, not a common instrument in American jazz of the time, with a cold, flute-like synthesizer—probably the first time those two instruments were used together. This album was ahead of its time in terms of instrumentation, but was a product of its time in that established ways of doing things were being challenged. Fans of Lalo Schifrin’s work will find this to rank with his best, and those not familiar with anything but the Mission Impossible theme will be drawn in further by the eccentric genius displayed here. Note: Like many of Schifrin’s albums of the period, there is no listing of musicians on the album cover, so it is difficult to know who is responsible for the marvelous performances here, except for Schifrin’s own contributions.
