One of the great jazz violinists of the world, Daniel Weltlinger launches his debut album, Souvenirs: A tribute to French-Gypsy composer and guitarist Django Reinhardt.

Boosted by a line-up of some of Australia’s finest jazz/world crossover musicians with special guest appearance by long time performing partner Lulo Reinhardt, Daniel presents an album of swinging classics like no other, with a carefully chosen selection of some of the most heart-warming, beautiful time-worn compositions by the Gypsy-jazz master. The album was proudly sponsored by BNP Paribas Australia who recognised Daniel as a strong talent in Australia’s jazz music scene, in line with the European-based bank’s sustained tradition of supporting the performing arts, culture, education, the environment and medical research through its corporate philanthropy programme, managed by the BNP Paribas Foundation.

Realising that the overwhelming majority of recordings dedicated to Gypsy-jazz music did not make enough of a focus on Django Reinhardt as a great composer, Daniel decided to make an album exclusively centered around Django’s unique, quirky and darkly beautiful compositions. In addition to some of Django’s most well-known works such as Minor Swing and Nuages are such gems as Nympheas and Tell Mozart that very rarely see the light of day and in being given a new breath of life serve as a gentle reminder not only of his being one of the greatest jazz guitarists of all time, but equally one of the great jazz composers of his era and indeed of all time.
