Paris in the 1930s: The clubs of the French capital are the birthplace of a new kind of music which will go down in history as the first original European contribution to the development of jazz. The main protagonist of this music is Django Reinhardt, the inventor of Gipsy Swing, a style combining driving straight-ahead rhythms with elegant melodic lines, serving as the basis for wild and virtuoso improvisations previously unknown on the guitar. This offers an ideal platform for highly talented guitarist Joscho Stephan, a player who appears to know no technical boundaries. Stephan belongs to a new generation of guitar virtuosos who are introducing fresh stylistic elements into Gipsy Swing and his concert appearances leave audiences open-mouthed and spellbound.   

Just 20 years old when he released his first CD on the highly regarded label Acoustic Music Records, his name was already known to insiders as a force to be reckoned with on the acoustic guitar.

His debut was named CD of the month by the American magazine Guitar Player and critics waxed eloquent about this virtuoso young musician working in the swing tradition of Django Reinhardt. This authentic European jazz form with its charming mixture of joyous enthusiasm and relaxed coolness offers the ideal platform for Joscho Stephan’s remarkable technical abilities. This fact is underlined by the high level of attention accorded to his CD releases.

Gypsy meets Jazz (2011)

  Two virtuosos of the strings sought and found each other: On the one hand, the
  master guitarist from Mönchengladbach, Joscho Stephan, on the other, the
  German-New-Zealander double bass player Olivier Holland. Ever since the 1990s,
  the paths of these two exceptional musicians have crossed in joint projects. The
  two artists always find new ideas and inspiration for their playing, which gave rise
  to a collaborative studio effort, where the two artists bundled their creative energies
  to form an exciting fusion style that also gave the album its title: “Gypsy Meets Jazz”.
  The two musicians are joined by Stephan’s father Günter on rhythm guitar, bass
Max Schaaf, violinist Sebastian Reimann and percussionist Thomas Kukulies.
Together they create a fascinating musical kaleidoscope with compositions by the two string virtuosos themselves and refreshingly interpreted classics by Bireli Lagrène and Charlie Parker, Chick Corea and Django Reinhardt. “Gypsy Meets Jazz” shows two brilliant trailblazers engaging in an extremely creative and highly entertaining excursion that enriches both genres in a fascinating manner.
