ItпїЅs natural for Empire Brass tuba player Sam Pilafian to have an affinity for classic jazz of the пїЅ20s. Before the acoustic bass became de rigeur for jazz dates, the tuba provided most of the low end for Dixieland and other jazz groups of the pre-swing era. PilafianпїЅs second collection of standards, after 1991пїЅs TravelinпїЅ Light, also features guitarist Frank Vignola (this time heпїЅs co-billed), and adds Don KeilingпїЅs rhythm guitar, Joe AscioneпїЅs drums, Andy KubiszewskiпїЅs percussion, and, for two songs, Ken PeplowskiпїЅs clarinet. Except for VignolaпїЅs own пїЅChasinпїЅ the Antelope,пїЅ all of the material is of the same Jazz Age vintage, including plenty of favorites from Hoagy Carmichael (пїЅNew Orleans,пїЅ пїЅ(Up A) Lazy River,пїЅ пїЅGeorgia on My MindпїЅ) and Irving Berlin (пїЅAlexanderпїЅs Ragtime Band,пїЅ пїЅWhatпїЅll I Do?пїЅ). Especially interesting are the numbers that date from the period but were rarely performed by jazz groups then, like пїЅMack the KnifeпїЅ and пїЅBill Bailey, WonпїЅt You Please Come Home.пїЅ Although Pilafian understandably takes a support role on MakinпїЅ Whoopee, the rest of the band takes up the slack, and Keiling takes a vocal on the title track. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
